We engineered a rapidly maturing tetrameric fluorescent protein called DsRed-Express2 that has minimal cytotoxicity. DsRed-Express2 exhibits strong and stable expression in bacterial and mammalian cells, and it outperforms other available RFPs with regard to photostability and phototoxicity.
